Arriving at an unknown station in an unknown town allows characters to discover new places and situations. This film sees a mother and her four sons, who had up until this point lived in the country, arriving into the city of Milan, loaded with luggage and baskets. The father of the family has died and they’ve taken the decision to come and live with Vincenzo, the eldest son, who already lives in the city and is supposed to be waiting for them at the train station. The scene starts inside the compartment, where the sons are pulling their things together. They wake their mother so that she goes down on to the platform. Vincenzo isn’t there. Not knowing what to do, they stay on the platform, which slowly empties. Only the family and the cleaners, who set about washing the train’s windows, remain on the platform. Simone heads off to look out for Vincenzo, but comes back immediately, rather annoyed. The tight little group pick their things up and take their first steps towards the unknown city and the new life that awaits them.
