Teachers / Filmmakers

Teachers that want to take part in the project don’t have to have an in-depth knowledge of cinema. To take part, you should have a strong interest in film and, if possible, have experience of teaching art-based subjects. The first step is to contact the cultural partner who coordinates the project in your region, or country. Cultural partners can be of a variety of organisations: cinemas; associations; festivals; educational and cultural resource centres, cinémathèques or Instituts Français. If the project CCAJ is already running somewhere in your region or country we’ll put you in contact with your nearest cultural partner. If the project isn’t in operation in your region or country let us know and, together, we can locate a cultural partner for you to work with.

The project is structured over the course of a year

1) The year starts with two days of training for the adults involved in the delivery of the project - teachers, filmmakers and cultural partners. The training days take place in either September or
October.
2) The workshops run between October and June, for a duration of around 50 hours over the course of the year. The workshop sessions take place with both a teacher and a filmmaker, who accompany the students through the course, analysing films, working on the practice of filmmaking and editing.
3) Teachers, filmmakers and cultural partners attend midterm screenings in March, when the first students’ productions are shared.
4) In June, the final, collectively made films from each group is screened before the participants of the project - children, teachers, filmmakers and cultural partners.

38 workshops

Each year 40 groups from across the project are selected to share their work. Their adult participants attend training days, project appraisal days and then, with a delegation of their students, the presentation of final films.

And the other workshops?

Participants in other workshop groups taking part follow the same program, and share their work with their peers across the world on the blog. The only difference is that they attend the training sessions and screenings of work at the cultural partner that they’ve been working with throughout the course of the year.
Financial planning for the running of the sessions and costings for international travel to attend the training sessions, half way point appraisal and final screenings must be made by or with the cultural partner.

Cultural Agencies

The role of the cultural partner

1) They seek or allocate funding to allow groups to take part in the project:
- Sourcing funding to pay for a filmmaker to work with a group, or groups, in a school or extracurricular situation.
- Sourcing funding to allow the adult participants - teachers, filmmakers, and cultural partners themselves - to attend, at the very minimum, the training sessions and the end of project screenings in
Paris. For the screenings, they will be joined by a minimum of 2-3 of their students, if not more.
2) They choose the teachers and filmmakers to take part in the project.
3) They establish the necessary means to allow the sessions to take place, arranging screenings and providing a degree of technical help. They will also follow the development of the project with the teacher and filmmaker.
4) Cultural partners coordinate and organize the travel arrangements for getting their groups to Paris, ensuring that they are present for the screenings and other events.
It is also possible to bring two organisations together in the coordination of this project, when they are complementary: for example, a cultural organisation which organizes the workshops and a cinémathèque, which could arrange screenings linked to the work of the workshop groups.
